The Power of Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone

Nine women, including me, are preparing to perform in White Collar Cabaret on the 19th March, on the stage at the Arts Centre. Hayley Wray, from Aerial Antics, has been training the group since December last year. We all have different strengths and weaknesses and reasons for wanting to do the challenge.

For me, my weakness is my strength, literally. As someone who has never exercised before, let alone tried aerial, it has been months of perseverance, grit, and a willingness to try new things. We've been learning the ins and outs of this art form while pushing ourselves to overcome fears and take on new skills.

As a coach, I know the power of stepping outside your comfort zone to achieve personal growth and transformation. I practice what I preach and challenge myself in new and exciting ways. Four years ago, I took on a year-long charity challenge and raised over £15,000 for FOJO. It was one of the toughest things I've ever done, but it helped me to stop drinking and change my life for the better. I learned that checking in with yourself, asking what you need, and stopping self-sabotaging is essential. I'm using the same approach to push myself outside my comfort zone with exercise and aerial.

Accountability has been vital for me during this journey. If it weren't for the pre-booked sessions and a show at the end, I would have dropped out when times felt hard, with bruised legs and ego, rather than seeing the development over time. Standing on stage and performing is another fear I'm working on. We have been pushed outside our comfort zones with the training, exploring new heights literally and figuratively!

We have made some fantastic friendships too, as we share a bonding experience, celebrating the highs and holding space for the lows weekly when we need it. I go away on holiday after the show, and I've found myself looking for studios where I can continue my training and an opportunity to meet like-minded people.

But why is it so important to push ourselves outside our comfort zones?

Here are just a few reasons:

  • Break through limiting beliefs: When we challenge ourselves to do something that feels difficult or even impossible, we prove to ourselves that our limiting beliefs are just that - limitations we've placed on ourselves. By pushing through them, we expand our sense of what's possible and can achieve things we never thought we could.

  • Build resilience: Life is full of challenges, both big and small. By intentionally seeking out challenges and taking risks, we build up our resilience and ability to handle whatever comes our way.

  • Experience personal growth: When we step outside of our comfort zones, we learn new skills, gain new experiences, and become better versions of ourselves. Whether it's through learning a new hobby, taking on a new job, or trying something we've always been afraid of, pushing ourselves helps us to grow and evolve.

  • Boost confidence: Nothing boosts our confidence quite like achieving something we once thought was impossible. When we push ourselves and succeed, we feel more capable and confident in our abilities.
